Summer 2008
The Shorter Shakespeare
Spend a day with the enchanter Prospero, usurped as a Duke by his brother, and marooned with his daughter for many years on a tiny Mediterranean island.
Now he has harnessed the magic he learned here to create a storm at sea which casts up his usurping brother, his brother’s accomplice, and a handsome young prince on to the shores of his island exile, and with the help of the airy spirit Ariel, he seeks retribution for his brother’s crime, romantic marriage for his daughter, and his own restoration to the dukedom.
Here, too, he learns of the drunken plot of the monstrous witch-born Caliban to murder him and claim the island for himself.
It is a day that, in The Circle 67 Players’ adaptation. lasts barely an hour in the open air at a pub or a castle or a common near you, and it is as perfectly enchanting and fantastic a summer afternoon’s or evening’s tale as any ever told by our greatest English playwright.
Admission is free, with a hat collection at the end.
